Teenage Rhinoplasty
The teenage years can be the hardest, trying to develop confidence in a changing body and face.
At this age, many teens begin to feel self conscious about the appearance of their nose.
Understandably, this is a central feature of the face. Dr. Jay Calvert, Beverly Hills rhinoplasty expert, performs teenage rhinoplasty as a major part of his practice.
About Teen Rhinoplasty
The common question that patients and parents alike ask is, “At what age can my teenager have their rhinoplasty safely and get a great result?”
Dr. Calvert performs rhinoplasty on teenagers as young as 14 years old.
Females needs to have began menstruating.
Menstruation marks the completion of the majority of primary facial growth and rhinoplasty can be performed safely.
For males, it is better to wait until late teens, when growth has plateaued and he has developed a “man face.”
It is important that the teenager is not only physically a good candidate, but also he/she must display psychological maturity to undergo surgery.
It is okay if the patient wishes to have surgery to improve his/her self confidence, but he/she should not be doing this due to external pressures.
The patient should be able to clearly enunciate his/her aesthetic and functional goals of surgery.
There are no hard and fast rules, though.
Sometimes there are circumstances that cause the operation to move up the agenda such as nasal fractures or breathing problems.
For instance, Dr. Calvert had a 12-year old boy who had not gone through puberty, but smashed his nose.
His septum was fractured and deviated, making breathing difficult.
Dr. Calvert opted to do a limited operation which straightened his septum without disturbing the growth centers of the nose.
There can be many moving parts, but Dr. Calvert will work with the parent(s) and patient to determine candidacy for having a teenage rhinoplasty.
Guidelines for Teen Rhinoplasty in Beverly Hills
First, the patient must be able to articulate what it is that they don’t like about their nose.
Second, the defect must be visible to the surgeon and they must be able to characterize the problem.
Third, there must be a surgical solution to the problem. In other words, the surgeon must see how the problem can be handled with an operation.
There are many patients who want things changed or altered, but the surgical plan is not available. This is a very important part of planning an operation.
Lastly, the patient must be on board to be a patient for the duration of the care. Most operations on the nose take time to heal.
