Some women may decide to enhance or revise the results of a previous breast implant surgery.
Whether you would like to exchange your breast implants for a different size or type, or whether you are just unhappy from you initial breast implant surgery, Dr. Calvert board-certified plastic surgeon can help you.
What is breast implant exchange?
Breast implants do not come with a lifetime guaranty and therefore need to be exchanged within 10 to 15 years after surgery.
Whether you are experiencing issues with your implants or are looking for an updated look, a breast implant exchange could be right for you.
You may want a breast implant exchange if you are experiencing any of the following:
- Leak and/or Rupture – A breast implant outer casing or “shell” can fail due to things such as physical impact or simple wear and tear. Whatever the reason for failure, the end result can be leakage or outright rupture of the implant. When this happens, the contents of the implant simply leak out and the breast deflates.
- Capsular Contracture – When a foreign body, such as a breast implant, is placed within the human body, an inflammatory reaction occurs as the body attempts to form a protective barrier around the foreign object to separate it from surrounding tissue. This protective barrier, or capsule, consists of the formation of scar tissue that surrounds the foreign object. As this scar tissue forms and builds up over time, it can eventually result in a thickening of the capsule wall. In the case of breast implants, this thickening can lead to a tightening or stiffening of the breast implant, which can cause the breast implants to become firm to touch and visibly deformed.
- Implant Displacement – in rare instances, the breast implant can become displaced (or “migrate”) within the body. If this movement is significant enough, it can result in an unnatural appearance warranting correction.
- Patient Desire – You may wish to make a change in implant size or replace your implants with a new implant material, from silicone to saline, or vice-versa.
A breast implant exchange is performed similar to the original breast augmentation.
The removal or exchange surgery is generally much easier and less invasive than the original surgery since the pocket for the breast implant already exists.
