What is breast reconstruction?

Breast reconstruction is the reforming of the breast after losing part or all of a breast due to breast cancer or other traumatic events.

Breast reconstruction surgery by Dr. Calvert in Beverly Hills can be performed immediately after a mastectomy or with a delayed approach.

This decision is based highly upon physician recommendations and the overall health of the patient.

You may want to consider breast reconstruction if you:

  • Lost part or all of a breast or breasts due to breast cancer or another traumatic event
  • Experience emotional distress due to the lost of breast

The Breast Reconstruction Procedure Beverly Hills

Prosthetic reconstruction (tissue expander/breast implant):

Prosthetic reconstruction involves placing a tissue expander in the pocket left behind from removing the breast tissue and under the pectoralis muscle.

Over the course of a few weeks to a few months, the tissue expander is gradually inflated with saline until the desired size is achieved.

Once this point has been reached, the tissue expander is replaced with a long-term silicone or saline breast implant.

This procedure is often performed along with nipple reconstruction.

Autologous reconstruction (patient’s own tissue):

During autologous reconstruction, the patient’s own tissue from either the abdomen, back, or gluteal region is used to create a new breast.

While the majority of the reconstruction is performed in one setting, there are often two to three additional surgeries needed to create symmetry to the opposite breast, reconstruct the nipple, revise scars, etc.

Recovery from breast reconstruction can vary from an overnight stay in the hospital to a multiple night stay depending on which procedure is performed.

The timing of secondary surgeries (nipple reconstruction, expander removal, etc.) also depends greatly on whether the patient will need chemotherapy and/or radiation treatments.
