University of Pittsburgh Alumni Weekend and Resident Graduation

Outstanding…Exciting…Promise..Progressive…Deep!

These are just a few words that come to mind while I reflect on the past weekend spent at my Alma Mater, the University of Pittsburgh Department of Plastic Surgery

After spending the weekend with the residents, fellows, faculty, and former Alumni of this fine training program, I am convinced that the future of Plastic Surgery is being cared for in an incredible way and is in good hands.

The team there has been pushing the envelope in the area of adipose derived stem cells, microsurgery, and complex plastic surgery reconstruction for children.

They have research funding through multiple government agencies, private business, and the residents and fellows have contributed, also with nearly $1 million is research funding!

The future of the Department of Plastic Surgery there lays in the hands of the talented Faculty.

Headed by Dr. Peter Rubin, the Department has managed to generate a most experienced and prestigious group of Plastic Surgeons.

Dr. Joseph Losee is the director of resident education and Vice Chairman of the Department.

He is a multi-tasker and high level craniofacial/pediatric plastic surgeon.

Along with these fine leaders are the leaders in clinical training that make it all happen: Dr. Ken Shestak, Dr. Ernie Manders, Dr. James Russavage, Dr. Vu Nguyen, Dr. Sandeep Kathju. Dr. Spenser Brown, and many others.  And then there is the outside UPMC faculty that are very much part of the training program:  Dr. Guy Stofman, Dr. Fred Heckler, Dr. Michael White, Dr. Robert Bragdon, Dr. Dennis Hurwitz, and so many others…including Dr. Bill Swartz and Dr. Sydney Coleman.

What an experience for the residents!

Suffice it to say that I am truly blown away by the growth and the expertise that this group has harnessed.

I am honored to be involved as an alumnus and I was happy to host a resident for 3 months this past year for an Aesthetic Surgery Rotation.

Dr. Diya Tantawi was able to spend a good bit of time with the team at the Rox Center including Dr. Andrew Ordon where he learned some of the minor differences between the Beverly Hills style practice and the Pittsburgh style.

Yet, being that I trained there and have brought all I learned to Beverly Hills plastic surgery, I would say that the GID attitude laid down by Dr. J. William Futrell is alive and well in the Rox Center!

Thank you Pittsburgh for giving me so much.

I will hope to make everyone there and from there proud as we grow through the years.
